When the court sets a high bond, families often assume they have to come up with the full amount in cash. That is rarely true. A large surety bond lets a licensed bondsman post the bond for a 15% premium — and in many cases a payment plan or collateral — so your loved one can leave custody while the case moves forward.
“Large” means different things in different cases: five-figure felony bonds, stacked charges, or high-risk holds where the cosigner and collateral are reviewed more carefully. The process is still manageable when you work with a bondsman who has posted these amounts before.
Sloan Bail Bonding has underwritten large surety bonds across Mecklenburg County and nearby jails since 2013. Call us and we will explain the premium, any collateral, and the timeline in plain language. For charge-specific felony context, see our felony bail bonds page, or start on our main Charlotte bail bonds page.
A surety bond is the standard commercial bail bond in North Carolina: you pay a non-refundable premium (15% of the bond), and the bondsman guarantees the full amount to the court. Larger bonds simply scale that structure — higher premium dollars, and often a collateral conversation alongside the paperwork.
High amounts show up most often with felony charges, serious injury cases, repeat records, or when multiple bonds stack. We also post large bonds on other charge types when the court sets a high figure — the underwriting is driven by the bond amount and risk, not only the label on the warrant.
After bond is set, we confirm the booking and amount with the jail, then walk the cosigner through the premium, payment options, and any collateral (property, vehicle title, or other assets when required). Nothing is signed until those pieces are clear.
Once paperwork and payment (or an approved plan) are in place, we post the surety bond at the facility and release processing begins. Discretion matters on large bonds — we keep conversations confidential and focused on getting someone home.
Two clocks run at once: the court or magistrate setting bond (some serious cases wait for a judge), and our underwriting of premium and collateral. We move as fast as is responsible. After posting, Mecklenburg County out-processing is typically two to six hours, depending on jail volume.
Step 1 — Arrest and booking at the county detention facility.
Step 2 — Bond is set by a magistrate or, when required, a judge.
Step 3 — You call Sloan; we confirm the amount and explain premium and collateral.
Step 4 — Cosigner paperwork, payment or payment plan, and collateral if needed.
Step 5 — We post the large surety bond at the jail.
Step 6 — Release processing begins — usually two to six hours after posting.
North Carolina sets the surety premium at 15% of the bond amount — the percentage does not change because the bond is large. A $50,000 bond is a $7,500 premium; a $100,000 bond is $15,000. Payment plans and collateral are common tools on higher amounts.
| Bond amount | Premium (15%) |
|---|---|
| $1,000 | $150 |
| $5,000 | $750 |
| $10,000 | $1,500 |
| $25,000 | $3,750 |
| $50,000 | $7,500 |
